Sony FDT-FBX5, 5" tear down

Sony produced over 65 models of the Watchman between 1982 and 2000. The Sony FDR-5BX5 portable TV features a 5″ CRT screen with a Slot-Mask Picture Tube made by Samsung instead of Sony. This model comes in both black and white variants. In this article, we're going to tear it down and then put it back together. I picked up the black version at a reasonable price, though it was missing one of the side switches. It was also intermittently working. I sometimes enjoy picking up sets that only partially work because it turns the process of fixing them into a bit of an adventure.

From Brochure:

Measuring just 6 7/8"W x 8 1/8"H x 8 7/8"D, this tiny Sony is the perfect TV for a bedside table, kitchen counter, or desktop! Its 5" picture tube delivers a bright, high-resolution image.

With direct audio and video inputs, it's ideal for use with video equipment and on-location camcorder monitoring. It features a built-in speaker, AM/FM radio, a headphone jack for private listening, and a pop-up handle for easy portability. AC power cord included. Weighs 5.5 lbs.

List Price: $350

Taking it all apart

It might feel like working on a jigsaw puzzle, so take your time and make sure to document each section you disassemble. I noticed that someone had previously opened my set and slightly damaged the antenna port. I managed to restore it, but be careful with the antenna. After unscrewing the antenna, you should be able to gently pull it out.

Next, remove the four screws. Then, unhinge the three tabs located at the bottom of the set to take off the back cover.

Testing after putting it all back together

I reflowed several boards to address any cold solder joint issues. However, it's important to be cautious when powering on the set, as there's a risk of accidentally creating a solder bridge. I used a load lamp with two bulbs for testing, which worked perfectly. If there had been any shorts, the bulb would have lit up extremely brightly.
