Toshiba 27AF42 CRT RGB mod
This tutorial covers the RGB mod for the below models.

CRT safety
Caution
You can die doing this! So read carefully! CRT TV is not a toy. Do not open a CRT TV. If you don't have any prior knowledge about handling high voltage devices, this guide is not for you. CRT TV contains high enough voltage (20,000+ V) and current to be deadly, even when it is turned off.
Plan of attack
Theory
Sometimes it is nice to know the theory behind the mod. I have put this on a separate page. This shows how the various resistor values are calculated.

Schematics
If you are building your own circuit, this diagram should help
Performing the mod
STEP 1: Remove the following components
- RR02 (4.7kΩ)
- RR04 (4.7kΩ)
- RR06 (4.7kΩ)
Disconnect the PiP chip by removing these
- RR01B (1kΩ)
- RR03 (1kΩ)
- RR05 (1kΩ)
STEP 2: Connect RGB and blanking wires
Insert your rgb at the empty holes left by RR01B (blue), RR03 (green) and RR05 (red) that connect to the capacitors at CR01, CR02, CR03
- Brown wire = blank
- Red wire = red
- Blue wire = blue
- Green wire = green
- Yellow wire = csync
- Organge wire = auxillary
- Grey wire = audio right
- White wire = audio left
- Purple = auxillary
- Black = common ground
STEP 3: Connect Sync, Audio and Ground wire
Connect the Sync, Audio Right, Audio Left and Ground wires
STEP 4: Prepare your RGB mux circuit
Below mod uses the RGB mux board. This is optional, but will make your mod easier and stable. You can also create the circuit presented in the schematics above without the board. Please also checkout the precalculated resistor values.
TA1310AN can handle a peak to peak voltage of 0.5V in the external RGB input lines.
Depending on the RGB/OSD stock resistors your CRT has, use the below inline resistors.
TV Model | 27AF42 |
---|---|
RGB/OSD inline resistors on CRT | None |
Audio LR (R7, R8) | 1kΩ |
RGB termination (R1, R2, R3) | 75Ω |
RGB inline resistors (R4, R5, R6) | shorted |
Diode (R9) | 1N4148 |
Blanking Resistor (R11) | shorted |
